 PRATTVILLE CITY COUNCIL
CALL TO ORDER: The Prattville City Council met in public hearing on Thursday, May 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Council President Argo called the meeting to order. Roll was called and all were recorded as being present. AGENDA
1. ORDINANCE: TOPROHIBIT ELECTRONIC MESSAGING/TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. (Sponsored By: Council President Argo). Lora Lee Boone,210 Fawn Lane, Prattville, Al 36067, appeared before the Council in opposition to the proposed Ordinance. She stated her concern for placing too many laws on the books, the difficulty in proving and enforcing the violation, and the possibility of violating citizens’ privacy. She suggested education rather than legislation. Councilman Gillespie agreed with Ms. Boone’s education suggestion but stated that he feels texting while driving is a nationwide problem. Councilman Miller thanked Ms. Boone for appearing before the Council but stated that while she pointed out some valid issues, he does not agree with all of her points. Council President Argo stated that while he appreciated Ms. Boone for expressing her opposing opinion, she is the only citizen he has heard from who is against the proposed Ordinance. He further stated that adopting a new law may only keep honest people honest but it also brings awareness to everyone. He also stressed the safety issue involved with texting while driving, which is most often overlooked by the younger adults. Bobby Caviness, 1604 Guiding Way Lane, Prattville, AL 36067, appeared before the Council to state his opposition to the proposed Ordinance. Mr. Caviness stated that in his opinion, the additional law would be just another excuse for officers to pull citizens over. ADJOURN:
There being no further business to come before the Council, Councilman Boles made the motion to adjourn and the motion was seconded. The meeting closed at 6:23 p.m.
