Councilman Willie Wood, Jr. was born in Prattville, Alabama and graduated from Autauga County High School in 1971. He attended Massey Draughon Business School for one year. He is employed by the State of Alabama, Department of Youth Services, as a Youth Service Aide. He is the father of two sons.Wood, first elected to office in 1988, is completing his sixth four-year term. He was instrumental in getting legislation passed to change council meetings from day to night. He was also a strong advocate in getting the city to address unpaved streets and developing a fair grading system to address paving others. He holds a yearly community event at North Highland Park to help sponsor student scholarships or help some other worthwhile community organization. He helped establish the first Boys and Girls Club in Prattville, serving as Board President. He, along with board members, built a new facility that opened August 2005. The facility continues to provide quality programs and services for our kids. Councilman Wood is a member of the Alabama Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (ABC-LEO) and the Prattville Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Autauga County Board of Education High Hopes Advisory Council. He was a participant in the 2004-2005 Leadership Alabama program. Councilman Wood was the recipient of the First Prattville Seventh Day Adventist Outstanding Leadership Award 1993, Men of Distinction, Inc. Man of the Year 1993, Autauga County Black Heritage Association Leadership Award 1997, and the Prattville Progress Statesman of the Year 1998. He was awarded the professional designation of Certified Municipal Official (CMO) by the Alabama League of Municipalities in 1998. He also earned the professional designation of Advanced Certified Municipal Official. Councilman Wood was honored in 2009 with an ALM Distinguished Service Award for 20 years service as a City Councilmember. He is an active member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Prattville, where he serves as Trustee Board Chairman and a member of the Male Chorus. |
