Following the release of 2010 Census results, the Prattville City Council initiated a process to evaluate the existing City Council districts. The evaluation indicated that the city's population was unequally distributed among the seven City Council districts. The results of the analysis were the subject of a public hearing on June 20, 2011 and are available on the web site under the topic Assessment of Existing Districts.

The Prattville City Council proposed a new district plan adjusting the district boundaries and equalizing the population. A hearing to receive public comment concerning the proposed district map was conducted at 6:00 p.m. on August 30, 2011 at Prattville City Hall. The City Council approved the proposed district plan by Ordinance Book 2011, Page 024 on September 6, 2011.

Following the Prattville City Council approval the redistricting plan was submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice for review as required by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The city's submission was received on January 17, 2012. On March 16, 2012 the Justice Department notified the city that the Attorney General does not interpose any objection to the changes to the city council districts.
