On January 1, 2004, the Division of Codes and Standards (formerly the Inspection Division) was created. This new division is part of the Fire Department under the Fire Marshal's Command. This division will be responsible for building inspections, fire inspections, and other current related duties. The Planning Department is responsible for issuing the actual permits and enforcement of City Ordinances passed by the City Council. The City of Prattville has adopted the following codes:

• 2006 International Building Code
• 2006 International Residential Code
• 2006 International Plumbing Code
• 2006 International Mechanical Code
• 2006 International Fuel Gas Code
• 2006 International Existing Building Code
• 2008 National Electrical Code NFPA 70
• Chapter 5 of City Ordinance

A designed set of plans must be submitted for approval to the Planning Department BEFORE any construction is to take place. Requirements for submitting plans for review are as follows:

• Commercial Plan Submittal additional requirements
• ALL Commercial, Industrial, and Multi-Family Site Plans
• Items required on ALL residential plans

Retaining Walls Section 1806 International Building Code 2003
1806.1 Retaining walls shall be designed to ensure stability against overturning, sliding, excessive foundation pressure and water uplift. Retaining walls shall be designed for a safety factor of 1.5 against lateral sliding and overturning.

A designed set of plans must be submitted for approval to the Planning Department BEFORE any construction is to take place.
