| Fragrance Garden Gets New "Pondless" Water Feature | | | |
| The Horticulture Division has created yet another beautiful attraction here in the Preferred Community. In efforts to beautify the city, but more specifically to refurbish the Butch Ray Fragrance Garden in Overlook Memorial Park, Horticulturist Ken Johnson chose to implement a "pondless" water feature in the center area within the garden. Pondless water features are much more child-safe than traditional ponds. Because there is no pool of water, the risk of drowning is non-existent. This feature will not generate stagnant water so that alleviates the issue of breeding mosquitoes. The water in this feature "disappears" through a stacked native rock feature. The water is then collected into a sump below the rocks and recycled back through the feature. This keeps the water cleaner, clearer and prevents "pond scum" from developing.
The Butch Ray Fragrance Garden refurbishing project will be on-going over the next few months. This first phase was a simple greening project around the new water feature. The Horticulture Division planted junipers, black-eyed susans, cannas and one Japanese maple. Ken Johnson said that they will continue to respect the theme of the garden which is fragrance-oriented. Touch-type fragrances and also blooming fragrances will be implemented into the garden.
