| Bingham Awarded PFD Firefighter of the Year | | | |
|
The Firefighter of the Year award is intended for the PFD member who, over the course of the year, has continually put forth an effort of the highest degree. This may involve fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire prevention, training or any combination thereof. This award is voted on, and thus awarded, by fellow firefighters. Bingham was nominated not only for performing his duties in accordance with the guidelines and requirements set forth by the City of Prattville and the Fire Department, but for exceeding those requirements. Josh has received above average marks on employee appraisals throughout his career and has always placed a high emphasis on training and increasing his knowledge. His supervisor has described him as consistently handling himself in a proficient and professional manner. He is assigned to one of the busiest units in the Department and continues to remain enthusiastic about his job and serving his community. Josh spends countless hours volunteering with the Fire Department's Explorers program. Sgt. Bingham also received an award for the highest number of response calls as well. Bingham answered 504 calls during approximately 114 24-hour shifts during 2009. "Most of the calls were medical related. My wife and I joked about me getting the award because I have spent a lot of the past year swapping time with people so that I can finish nursing school. My wife is glad all my time away from home 'paid off'," stated Bingham. When asked about his responsibilities now that he's attained the rank of Sergeant (June, 2008), Josh said that he has more responsibility. He makes sure reports are completed, ambulances are properly equipped, and now manages different medical scenes. He really enjoys his job; it's what he's always wanted to do. Due to his success in his career with the Fire Department, we wanted to know what he would tell a new recruit if asked how to succeed. "Find someone who is knowledgeable in this field and who has good character to be your mentor. Never be afraid to ask a question because the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked. Finally, never stop learning. We can all be teachers...everyone from the newest employee to the person who is days away from retiring," said Sergeant Josh Bingham. The City of Prattville is proud of Josh and his accomplishments. Please join us in congratulating him for his performance over and above the call of duty. |
