FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 7, 2011
We recognize the value of government-to-citizen communication, and the crucial role of mobile technology in today’s society. That’s why the City of Prattville is going mobile! You can now get the latest community information and resources right to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. We’re publishing news, events, maps, and services through a revolutionary mobile app called YouTown. (It has now also released in the Android App Store! October 13, 2011)
YouTown allows the publication of various types of public data -- all of which is easily viewable on your mobile device. Using an easy-to-navigate interface, you can browse recent news articles, check out local events, and find resources for civic services.
City Webmaster Teresa Lee first learned about the mobile app development project at the National Association of Government Webmaster’s conference in September 2010. She submitted the city as a possible location for beta testing this technology.
On October 10, 2010, DotGov, Inc. CEO Michael Riedyk announced the winning partner cities. Only twelve cities/counties were selected across the United States and Prattville was one of them! Beta testing began in November 2010 and continued through March of this year.
“A mobile app of this complexity would have cost the City of Prattville tens of thousands of dollars had we contracted out the development on our own. Knowing this, and that it wouldn’t be possible to budget for it; I jumped at the chance to acquire something free that would benefit not only our residents, but visitors as well. You’ll be able to get news, upcoming events information, see a map of our parks, parade routes, and attractions on the go!” said City Webmaster Teresa Lee. “We were the only city in Alabama chosen to participate and therefore, the only one providing this service to taxpayers free of charge.”
You can find what you’re looking for on one simple screen -- even if you’re out of town or on the road.
The mobile app is free forever (no development costs and no monthly fees, which are based on population, not users) to the City of Prattville as a reward for participating in testing. The app is free to citizens in the App Store and the Android App Store.
In the very near future, YouTown will be expanded to operate on other smart phones! We will continue to announce additional offerings upon their release.
