Confined Space Simulator Added to PFD Training Center

September 12, 2016

The City of Prattville Engineering Department and Street Division provided the labor, machinery and dirt for creation of a confined space simulator at the Stanley Gann Fire Training Facility. This prop will allow our Fire Training, a Regional Training Center (RTC) for the Alabama Fire College (AFC), to host the AFC Rescue Technician Confined Space I/II class. These classes are based on the National Fire Protection Assocation (NFPA) 1006 "Standard for Rescue Technician Professional Qualifications." The prop meets the requirements of the AFC to offer students, who pass the course, IFSAC and Pro Board certifications.

Prattville's RTC will be the first in the State of Alabama to have a confined space prop that is comparable to the prop on campus at the Alabama Fire College. The ability to teach the class locally will save an estimated $900 per student in travel, meals and lodging for our own firefighters.

"Our Mayor has the forethought to allow PFD to place the funds generated from classes hosted at our regional training facility into a revenue account for facility improvements," stated Prattville Fire Chief Terry Brown. "Partnering with Engineering/Streets allowed us to save thousands of dollars in putting this simulator into place."

The project cost us $19,000 in materials, which came out of monies generated by classes hosted at our RTC, and Engineering/Streets provided the labor, equipment and dirt.

Each class PFD hosts will generate additional revenue to be used towards other improvements at the facility.

"I would like to thank City Engineer Robby Anderson and his team for the work they have done on the Confined Space Prop," Captain Spencer Williamson, PFD Training Division. "Thanks for the hard work and dedication to make this happen. Thanks to Chief Brown, Deputy Chief Whaley and Battalion Chief Roberts for the support in allowing the installation of this simulator. I am confident that this will be one of our best training props in the weeks, months, and years to come."
