The Wastewater Department will be conducting smoke testing throughout the City beginning tomorrow, March 13th. Testing will run over the next 4-5 weeks.

The smoke is non-toxic and allows crews to see if there is a crack or break in sewer mains. If you see smoke coming up out of a manhole, the grass in your yard, the roof vent on your house, or out of the toilet or drains in your bathroom, please call Communications at 334-361-9911 to let them know. You should only see this inside your home if you have a bathroom that is not regularly used. The p-trap gets dried out and will allow the smoke through to be visibly emitted. To prevent this, flush that toilet and run the water in the sink and shower for a minute.

This testing is normal preventive maintenance. Residents should receive a letter a few days before testing is done in their neighborhood. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Wastewater crews at 334-361-3626.
